 BASIC INFORMATION

|| NAME ||

Qū Héng (曲恒) [In accordance to how Chinese names work, his surname is first]

|| AGE ||

25 [in the Gregorian Calender. He'd be one or two years older in the Lunar]
"Current" Age: ~2235

|| TIME PERIOD ||

Warring States Period || 475-221 BC || Ancient China

|| GENDER ||

Cis Male

|| HEIGHT ||

182cm || 5'11"
(He was really really tall for someone in his time period. It was quite scary seeing him lumbering onto the battlefield)

|| STATS ||

«STR» || 5 || ✦✦✦✦✦

As a child, he spent most of his time either working out on the field or roughhousing with the other kids in the neighbourhood. As he really looked up to the soldiers that defended his home, he spent time 'training' himself as well, building his strength. By the time he was a soldier, he was already stronger than many of the other peasant recruits, and only grew stronger now that he had somewhat formal training through his being a soldier. Also, being able to fight while on horseback is all about those thighs.

«DEX» || 4 ||✦✦✦✦✧

Though he can't do fancy summer saults or backflips, Heng's surprisingly light on his feet, and is very good at handling his weapon. He worked very hard to train himself to be in top form for one weapon, instead of splitting his attention between multiple weapons as other soldiers did. After he got promoted to Captain, his combat was changed from by foot to by horseback, so his upper body reflexes became much quicker.

«CON» || 3 || ✦✦✦✧✧

He's pretty hardy from all the time he just spends in the elements - farming, fighting, marching, more marching, sleeping in rickity tents, marching. He gets over illnesses pretty quick, and seldom catches anything at all. The most severe illness he's ever gotten was chickenpox when he was four. He lived.

«INT» || 0 || ✧✧✧✧✧

He never did pursue the path of a scholar like his parents wished.

«WIS» || 1 || ✦✧✧✧✧

He was sort of mohist, and was never really a philosopher. Thinking of the bigger picture or why things were or pondering the mysteries of the human nature only distracted from the realities of battle and death. When someone tells him to jump, he does as he's told, and maybe stabs someone on his way down. Though once he gets rolling, his willpower is strong. However, during his Captaincy he devoted time to sit in on strategic meetings of his generals when he was allowed, and did his best to learn how to fight effectively and sacrifice as little of his troop as possible. He was a quick thinker on the battlefield, and that's where it counts for a soldier like him.

«CHA» || 0 || ✧✧✧✧✧

It's hard to be charismatic when people don't seem to listen to you. He's soft spoken not in volume but in stature. Not the most commanding presence. He was a captain, yes, but he was promoted on fighting merit alone. He improved his leading skills after being promoted, but didn't really live long enough to become that smooth talking inspiring speech giving war captain.

➤ PERTAINING TO HIS APPRENTICESHIP

|| LEVEL OF SPIRITUAL AWARENESS ||

Level 5, they're there, if hazy, and they're floating. He resists the urge to pluck at them. When he first started out he could barely see them at all, which made reaping very difficult, but with time they became clearer to him.

➤ PERSONALITY

[-]
Apathetic.

[+]
Unfinished business leaves a bad taste. He knows best as not much later after he died his state got conquered. He's a persistent man. Once he actually starts his job, he'll see that it's completed. If a Reap order's been issued, he will cut their thread. If a Hunter gives chase, he will follow (unless he's ordered not to. What HQ wants overrides his wants). This persistence is likely born from his honour, or at least amplified by it. However, this doesn't mean that he doesn't recognize a losing battle when he sees one. He's learned over time to instead of trying to force his way through any sort of obstacle, sometimes it's better to work around it. He'll bear the burden of that extra effort.

[+]
He's honest, if very straight forward. He gets to the point, but does have some delicacy. Though he can be socially clumsy, or withdrawn at times, or ruthless on the battlefield, he overall cares a lot for people. Once a big brother, always a big brother. If you need to talk to someone, he'll probably be willing to lend an ear. And since he's so chill, he gets along even with people who have "difficult personalities", even if it's just on his side.

[+/-]
As he was a soldier, he's obedient and seldom questions orders, putting his trust in his leader. This doesn't mean he likes them, but he recognizes their authority and does as he is told. Unlike how many other Apprentices, especially the ones from soldier backgrounds, start to question their purpose or the fact that they're still killing, Heng doesn't think about these things [much]. It's pointless to ask why, because no answer will ever satisfy. Reaping is just a part of life, his duty, it needs no purpose beyond that.

[+/-]
Honourable, and puts his all in this for doing anything halfheartedly is an insult to whatever it is that you're doing. This applies to everything. His job, his tea making, his fighting. He's very wound up about his code of conduct, and follows it well. He won't go as far as to impose it on others, but he may bring it up at times and sound like the no-fun guy. In battle, this honour manifests in his fierceness in battle, an almost viscious display of mercilessness. If you're here, you accept that you will die, and you will not try to wiggle out of it. That's that.

[+/-]
He's protective of those he fights for and those he cares about (though technically according to moism, he should care for everyone equally). However, he's very cold to enemies, as highlighted above in his displayed mercilessness. As an Apprentice, enemies means Hunters, and he doesn't take kindly to deserters and traitors.

[+]
He's actually pretty lax outside of battle, and prefers to sit back in the flow of others, however on the battle field he's more on his feet. He was a captain after all. He's patient in the way that he has no problem waiting for someone, or something, or sometime.

[-]
When he gets angry though, he gets angry, and it's hard to calm him. Make sure to keep weapons and throwable objects away from him when he's irritable. This really only happens if someone breaks his trust, or he has to deal with people who aren't honourable (namely traitors, as he's had to deal with them while he was living as well). He's not the forgiving type of guy, and once you're on his bad side, you should probably just settle down and enjoy your stay, because you'll be there for a long time. Remember, just because he acts normally around you (well, coldly still but not actively seething at you) doesn't mean you're forgiven~~

[-]
He can be very stubborn though, even childishly so. If it's not his type of tea, he won't drink it. If he doesn't have direct confirmation from headquarters, he may not believe an order you say. If he's still angry at this person, have fun convincing him to meet them. It can get tiring for others who have to deal with this. Often times he carries on being stubborn for so long that he's embarrassed to stop being stubborn, so he keeps going at it.

[-]
Surprisingly, he can seem to be unmotivated at times, though it typically only shows when he's not on the job. It probably comes from the years of fighting and campaigns he endured as a soldier both in life and in the afterlife, and though he treats his job seriously, he finds that his attitude towards a lot of activites has just become: "Let's get this over with." He also likes to lie down like an old man with aching muscles. But he kind of is an old man with aching muscles so.

➤ BIOGRAPHY & OBITUARY

|| BIOGRAPHY ||

Pre Appretinceship

Heng was born of a peasant farmer couple in the state of Qi during the late Warring States period. During his childhood, between helping out on the fields, he'd play fight with the other children, wrestling and clashing sticks. The threat of invasion was always hovering over the common people, but they did their best to keep their heads held high and continue as they usually do. As such, Heng, like most of the other children, deeply admired the soldiers. They wanted to be just like them.

He had two brothers younger than him who he was very close to, and they spent nearly all of their time together. His parents wanted at least one of them to go study to be a scholar. None of them did.

When Heng became of age he was drafted into the army, unsurprisingly. Qi was a powerful state, one of the last standing, and Heng was waiting for the day that he'd get sent out to battle - to ride in glory and defend his state. Unfortunately he survived his maiden battle, and he was no longer excited about the glories of war. Under the tutalage of senior soldiers, he and the rest developed their skills in weapon weilding and techniques to defend against the chariots and horses that only made the battle field so much more chaotic. Heng did what he needed to survive, and the soldier's apathy set in. He adopted himself a code of honour to repeat in the back of his head during fights, and it made it more bearable.

His brothers weren't so lucky in battle. Both were killed within a year of being a soldier. Heng, being the only son of his family now, fought harder and drive off Qin, so that he could go back home.

His skill in battle was recognized in time, and he was promoted to the rank of a captain. A few months later, he was speared through the head, and was dead before he even fell to the ground from his horse. Qi lost to Qin soon after, and so the Warring States period ended, giving way to the first dynasty of a China united through blood.

When Heng opened his eye, he was surrounded by chrysanthemums, much more beautiful than the ones he'd boil for his tea. When he found out what it was he was brought here to do, he felt a familiar tiredness set in. What cruel fate to be awarded with a draft to another army after his death as a soldier who's known all but violence for most of his life?

Post Apprentinceship to Present

He accepted his new unlife as some twisted joke from the Heavens. Another test before he was allowed to see his family again? Or perhaps punishment for failing to protect them? For leading his brothers into the life of a soldier, for failing his men when he was speared, for slowly losing his motivation throughout his life? He'll never know, for the Death that resides here is an unfamiliar one, and he doesn't ask where the deities he grew up praying to for a good harvest or victory in battle are.

He was promised that once he was finished with his service, he'd ascend (or something) to be with his family again. He tries not to think too hard about this, because he'll start to doubt its legitimacy (he was failed once in his path through death, as proven by his being here at all).

He keeps himself busy with his duties as an Apprentice, cutting threads quietly, and doesn't indulge in much else. He's kind of boring in that sense, huh. He does like wandering through streets, in cities or in rural villages. Though the others can't see him, it makes him feel calm.

Throughout his hundreds of years of service, he's been with many teams. He's seen people supposedly 'ascend', or die, or fall, or become hunters. On a happier note, his most recent team all ascended this time round, and he's currently on hold until he is assigned to a new team.

And now we are at the present.

|| OBITUARY ||

Qu Heng || ~27 [Lunar Calender] || Warring States Period (475-221 BC) [Late, so closer to 221BC]

A captain of the Qi State's army, renowned for his ferocity and boldness in battle, distinguised by his continued use of the standard infantry soldier's Ji instead of a sword. He helped win many victorious battles, though always retreated from the celebrations to drink on his own. He died in one of the last battles as the state of Qin conquered the state of Qi. A spear was thrust through his head, entering from the eye. He died instantly, and his body wasn't recovered from the battlefield for proper burial.

➤ EXTRA

The only tea he'll drink is chrysanthemum tea, though he begrudgingly accepts green tea.

He's notoriously bad with technology, but is trying hard to learn his way around the technological age.

During his life, he was never literate. He's had 2000+ years to catch up, so he's good to go now.

He doesn't like talking about his reapings. He's been around long enough to witness war after war after war, and being an Apprentice during those times is... difficult. He's basically a sort of living history book.

He was raised in Moism/Mohism , and tries to adhere to its beliefs. He struggles (especially with the part showing distaste towards the arts. He loves music too much. And also the thing about loving everyone. That's a pretty tough order. And those two are like the main points of mohism so he kind of fails at being a mohist.)

He follows the ancient Chinese Folk Religion deal, which is more just the worship of lots of deities that perform roles, typically specific to each region (can be as specific as from one village to the next). Some deities appear across regions, like the Heavenly Court.

He still wears armor when he needs to fight, but otherwise he does have some sense of what modern fashion looks like. He prefers his time-period clothes, though.

The armor he wears isn't from his historical time period, however.

He seldom takes off his eyepatch (it's not a pretty wound at any rate). He has a large scar on the back of his head too, from where the spear exited. You can't really see it unless you brush his hair out of the way though.

He's a horse guy.

Little kids are A+, they remind him of his younger brothers. I'm not sure how most kids like Heng though haha

He can wink, though with his straight face it can be pretty funny. It'd just look like blinking anyways

This is the song that's supposed to play on his music thing on Threadcutters but won't work. This is his theme I suppose: youtu.be/_ZqsOhMsGJc

He blames himself for dying on the battlefield. But he was so tired.

➤ Notes

My friend helped me come up with Heng's threadcutter username after I complained about how I couldn't combine "chrysanthemum" and "damn" in a satisfying way

I asked my dad to help name him and I told him I wanted a name that sounded tough, and without skipping a beat he suggested (in mandarin) "Metal Rock", so that's his official nickname pffft

Takeshi Kaneshiro is his voice  for now hehe

The size is about a head pillow....with a tail."
